This 19th century coconut grater is from Kerala in South India. The iron blade is shaped as a graceful peacock, the base is carved from a single block of jackfruit wood. It reflects the wealth and high quality artisanal work coming from South India driven by the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant caste.
Like many utility pieces from India, it is embellished with very beautiful carvings for such a functional piece and has a wonderful rich patina from daily use.
Today, these make fantastic ornamental and curiosity pieces. A reminder beauty can be found in even the simplest of functional items.
